Requirement: Bring sufficient printed images with you

The photo book workshop with Wolfgang Zurborn sensitizes the participants to the many questions that need to be considered when producing a book. The entire process from image to dummy and ultimately to book will be discussed in detail. The aim is to emphasize the special qualities of the image material and the independent personal perspective through the composition of the photographs. Only a consistent selection of images with a meaningful dramaturgy creates the basis for a dummy that stands out from the mediocrity.

Workshop participants are asked to bring sufficient printed images (ideally approx. 13×18 cm) so that the editing process can be clearly conveyed to all participants.

Wolfgang Zurborn (*1956) is a freelance photographer. His work has been exhibited worldwide. Together with Tina Schelhorn, he has been running the Lichtblick photo gallery in Cologne for 38 years. In 2010, he founded the Lichtblick School, in whose program photo book workshops together with Markus Schaden play a major role. He also teaches photography at various German universities and in international workshops. He has been on the board of the German Photographic Academy (DFA) since 1998.

Since October 2020, the DFA’s online format Editing Challenge has offered Wolfgang Zurborn an ideal platform for his photo book ideas. He competes against other book designers to create different book designs from the same photographer’s image material. In the Zoom talk, the experts present their approach and discuss their results with the image authors and the audience.
