Softcover is a speciality shop for photo books, art books, indie magazines & zines in the heart of Vienna, Austria. We officially opened our doors in December 2023 and launched our Online Shop in May 2024.

Why Softcover
There’s a store for independent publishing in almost every big city, but not in Vienna (until now). Softcover is a shop in Vienna (6th district, Stumpergasse 53-55) for carefully handpicked indie magazines, art books, photo books and small editions. It is the first and only shop in Vienna to focus on independent publishing and topics like photography, graphic design, art and culture. Quality comes before quantity.
Softcover was founded in 2023 by designer and photographer Sebastian Gansrigler. From the two projects Auslöser Magazine and OFF GRID Photo Festival and in connection with other events and pop-ups from 2018 to 2023, our book collection has grown more and more over the last years. And since our bookshelf has been almost bursting at the seams, our passion for independent publishing has also deepened. It was time to create a permanent place for this in Vienna. A new space for new ideas, good design, carefully curated printed matter and passion for independent publishing.

We want to open a dialog and promote exchange. Softcover is a declaration of love to indie publishing. We are constantly organizing events such as artist talks, book presentations, magazine release parties, signings, readings, workshops and more. Collaborations with Softcover
We are planning collaborations with artists and independent publishers, as well as providing direct support with advice on self-publishing, paper selection, binding and distribution. We are also planning a number of books that we will produce ourselves together with photographers, designers and artists.
