TOTALE 4 is emerging at a time when feminist achievements are not being consolidated but must once again be defended. The hypersexualization of femininity is becoming the new norm, while anti-feminist backlash is increasingly intertwined with right-wing discourse. This shapes what is told and how, as well as who speaks and who is heard. We grapple with this present reality—negotiating, contextualizing, repressing, and reacting—to the point of a weariness that leaves little room for dreaming. We must continually resist this situation, collectively “staying on top of it.” The contributions in this issue spring from this present moment; they are part of (working) realities and experiences, close to ruptures and attempts. They recount life and work within structures that often obstruct rather than support. And they examine images themselves—what they assert, what they conceal, and what is unleashed within them.

TOTALE takes its physical space quite literally; the magazine lies there, is read, passed on, forgotten, and rediscovered. A point of connection from which further thought can unfold. And perhaps from there we’ll find our way back into movie theaters and—despite everything—begin to dream again.
