TOTALE is a feminist film magazine. A place of inspiration and exchange where people can talk about film.
TOTALE means foresight; for us, it means going in search of perspectives and questions that are often overlooked. The focus is feminist, which means that we speak from our own experience, and yes, we also name and denounce grievances. But first and foremost, we want to learn from the strength, commitment and strong will of Flintas* from all eras. Let's capture the TOTALE together and make the film magazine a platform where we listen to each other, encourage each other and fight for equality! *Women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people
In this issue:
For as long as film has existed, both the medium and the industry have been a site of feminist struggles. It has been simmering for 129 years and it cannot and must not be overlooked that we still find ourselves in patriarchal structures that shape our lives, our work and not least our way of perceiving and telling stories.
A friend who works a lot on film sets wanted to reflect on her daily struggles with sexism and male dominance on set in a field report for this issue of TOTALE. With the finished article in hand, she decided against publication shortly before submitting it out of justified fear of possible consequences. This case is representative of what many experience: Being forced to fit into power structures leaves what needs to be named unsaid and invisible.
But we don't want to lose ourselves in resignation, which is why we can hardly wait to publish issue after issue to discuss and share the seemingly endless wealth of topics and formats in TOTALE. TOTALE has an educational mission that goes beyond the print magazine. We are incredibly grateful that the network is constantly growing thanks to the many people and initiatives with whom we exchange ideas and support each other. More and more spaces are being created through collective strength that allow change and form new structures - in this sense: thank you to everyone!
