The 120-page book contains 50 images from the series Transfiguration (2003–2026). In this ongoing series of photographic self-portraits, Sabine Jelinek captures recurring moments of nosebleeds in the mirror—intimate, acute physical states in which she is both the subject and the creator of the image. Following the design concept, the photographs are given a special varnish that visually emphasizes the reflective nature of the portraits. The deliberately compact book format emphasizes the vulnerability and intimate dimension of the series. The accompanying text by Ruth Horak situates the works within the context of the self-portrait taken with a camera in a mirror and connects art-historical references to the depiction of suffering with media-reflective questions regarding apparatus, gaze, and photographic self-observation.
Sabine Jelinek (born 1969 in Vienna) lives and works in Vienna and Linz. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 2024, she earned her PhD in the artistic-scientific PhD program and has been teaching at the University of Art and Design Linz since 2008, currently as an associate professor of transmedia photography. Her artistic work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Lentos Art Museum in Linz, the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg, the Austrian Cultural Forum in New York, and currently at the Francisco Carolinum in Linz.
