In the Engine Room of Photography
Johannes Raimann (b. Vienna, 1992; lives and works in Düsseldorf) scrutinizes the premises and prerequisites of photography. His works underscore the conjunction of “phôs” (light) and “graphía” (mark/drawing). His interdisciplinary approach combines photography with other fields such as philosophy or physics in an effort to shed light on the manifold interconnections between them. In recent years, Raimann’s inquiries have increasingly focused on specific materials and equipment. He creates reflective surfaces that not only hold a mirror up to the beholders, but also render global production chains and the associated economic and social realities.
The artist’s book Zx relates the story of light streaming through an apparatus in a sequence of images uninterrupted by text or other interpolations. At its center stand the two works Camera (2020) and digital_camera (2023). Picking up on the techniques represented in them, Raimann uses them to reinterpret his own shots by applying the method that fits in each instance. These photographs are complemented by technical drawings that constituted the conceptual point of departure for the two works. Stripped of their functional labels and embedded in a new context, the original physical-technical depictions reveal their aesthetic potential. Raimann’s concise vision is also reflected by the book’s material design, which makes for a very special tactile experience.
