In a realm of layered temporalities, WHERE DEER FLY AND STONES CRY by Erli Grünzweil weaves an autofictional journey. Through reinterpretation and transformation, it confronts rigid binary, religious, and patriarchal structures, drawing from a legend of a shape-shifting stone and a place called ‘Paradise’, where surface beauty masks deeper tensions.

Through photographs oscillating between staging and documentation, drawings by Erli Grünzweil’s grandfather and a collaborative text written together with Ines Frieda Försterling, a world emerges in which nothing can be taken for granted. From a queer perspective, the project challenges the normative values, truths, and inherited narratives that have been passed down through generations.

Erli Grünzweil (they/them), *1992, is based in Vienna, Austria. Grünzweil studied Applied Photography and Time-Based Media at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and was awarded the START Scholarship for Photography in 2024 and the Photo Art Award WHAT A VIEW! By OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH in 2026.
