What of liminality? Perhaps it is an abused word, but a word that nonetheless hovers at the point of uncertainty, recalcitrant in its position to give less and less back to the cartographer of such concepts and climes. What are we, if not passing through a constant state of uncertainty? It is the very thing we can count on.

Cornelia Pierce's abstract moon-drenched views of the Arizona desert are entangled with a sense of liminality. They conjure spaces and geologies that, on the surface, present as familiar. However, after passing through sequential views within the world she crafts, we begin to see that the terrain is interior, and what presents as the exterior is thwarted by the deep psychological lode within the images. Nothing is fixed, and things become less and less familiar as we read the artist and her works on repeat. In her words...

The desert exudes a profound sense of timelessness. Within this landscape, dreams seem to be of a different texture, more vivid, often paired with an element of dread. Many nights when the hot air hangs heavy, saturated by scents of decay and parched exhaustion, I've slipped into rooms of bones and corpses, haunted by venomous serpents.

Over the years, I embarked on a quest for a deeper understanding of the desert's essence, aesthetic, textural, and psychological intricacies. The symbolic resonance, akin to the spiritual nourishment of the land’s ancestors, inspired a personal journey within myself. Twilight emerged as my steadfast companion, unveiling a portal to a liminal realm, a threshold between life and death.
