In Meta Cars, Beni Bischof transforms found images of cars into visual distortions. Through digital manipulation and radical simplification, the original shapes are abstracted – reduced to ghostly and ridiculous silhouettes that feel both familiar and alien. The result: automotive hybrids with an almost hypnotic pull. Drawing on the aesthetics of American muscle cars and the TV shows of the 1980s and ’90s, Bischof taps into a retro sense of coolness – reframing it for the digital age with irony, intensity, and unsettling beauty.
Beni Bischof, based in St. Gallen, is a Swiss artist whose work includes drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, and installation. Since 2005, he has published his own Laser magazines, combining images and text to comment on pop culture and everyday life. His practice often uses humor and visual excess to critique social norms. In 2015, he received the Manor Art Prize St. Gallen, leading to a solo show at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen. He created Made On Earth By Humans, a bespoke eLorean art car shown at the Biennale Images Vevey (Sept 2024) and at the Kunstzone Lokremise St. Gallen (Dec 2023), which will become part of the HORTUS project in Basel. His work has been exhibited internationally.
