Why a print magazine? How does the team work together? How do you finance an independent magazine? How do you design it? What does the future hold for MacGuffin?

Tickets are available for a donation of your choice. We recommend 6 € so that we can cover part of Kirsten’s travel expenses. Thank you very much. Limited number of tickets available. Tickets are non-refundable. If you are unable to attend, you can transfer your ticket to another person.

MacGuffin is a biannual design & crafts magazine from Amsterdam featuring stories about the life of ordinary things. Each edition of the magazine takes an object (The Bed, The Desk, The Bottle, The Chain, The Letter, and many more) and explores the manifold stories it generates and uncovers the personal and sometimes curious relationships we have with the stuff that surrounds us. MacGuffin was founded 10 years ago by Kirsten Algera and Ernst van de Hoeven. So far they published 15 issues, the latest one being “The Stich”, released in September 2025.

Kirsten Algera is a writer, curator and design historian based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She is the Founding Editor and Art Director of MacGuffin. Kirsten has written widely on art and design, has been invited to sit on a number of international juries, and is a regular speaker at symposia and conferences. She has lectured design research at international design schools like the University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU), the Design Academy Eindhoven and ECAL in Lausanne. Other projects include exhibitions, installations, public programs and workshops developed in partnership with institutions such as Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, the Istanbul Design Biannual, the Guangzhou Triennial and Disarming Design from Palestine.
