Florian Rainer (photographer) in conversation with Josef Chladek (Virtual Bookshelf)

When the Ferris wheel casts its evening shadow over the Prater, a smaller but perhaps even more important wheel comes to life: the Tagada. For decades, teenagers have been drawn to its spell. They seek a place of togetherness and escapism. Florian Rainer’s work, photographed in the summer of 2020, thrives on this energy: it tells the story of Viennese teenagers who want to forget their worries and the restrictions imposed by COVID-19 and have chosen the Tagada as their meeting place. The Tagada is the only ride in the Prater that requires physical control and a willingness to take risks. Injuries are accepted as part of the game. The speed, the lights, the music, and the audience create a space for growing up.

Florian Rainer (*1982) lives and works as a photographer, sociologist, and artist in Vienna. His work focuses on topics such as the biographical conditioning of vision, social phenomena in borderline situations, migration, and class. Photography serves as both a method and a portal for him.
