On the evening, the artist Jonas Höschl will present his new publication 80 Portraits: 73 Männer, 7 Frauen in a dialog with Felix Hoffmann, Artistic Director FOTO ARSENAL WIEN. There will also be a keynote speech by Alexander Winkler, publisher of the book Untergangster des Abendlandes. Ideologie und Rezeption der rechtsextremen Identitären.

“The unrecognizable black and white portraits cause unease. In the form of various logos, visual codes of the far-right scene are emblazoned on the shirts, jackets or scarves of the mostly darkly dressed and menacing-looking actors: holding a cigarette, a telephone, flowers, a flag or a camera – ready to pull the trigger quickly. To compile this image archive, Jonas Höschl scoured numerous antifa research platforms and internet portals, knowing full well that he would also find this kind of image practice in the right-wing scene.” – Margit Neuhold

Jonas Höschl (*1995, Regensburg) is a conceptual artist and photographer. For his artistic work, which encompasses the media of printmaking, sound, video and installation, he has received the Paula Modersohn-Becker Art Prize and the Bavarian Art Promotion Prize for Fine Arts, among others. Most recently, his two art books Fade Away Medley (Das Wetter) and Politik von Medienbildern (Hatje Cantz) were published.

In his graphic prints and video works, he questions the identity-forming potential of political systems. Using regional political scandals and European conflicts, he shows the alienation from unifying ideals. Jonas Höschl appropriates the sometimes historical visual languages of differently oriented ideologies in order to reveal propagandistic manipulation. Through recontextualization, he refers to the referentiality of contemporary documents.
