Johannes Raimann presents his artist’s book “Zx” in conversation with Johan Nane Simonsen.
The artist’s book Zx tells the story of light streaming through an apparatus in a sequence of images and without interruption, for example by text. At the center are the two works Camera (2020) and digital_camera (2023). Raimann takes up the techniques depicted and uses them to reinterpret his own photographs by using the appropriate method in each case. These photographs are complemented by technical drawings, which formed the conceptual starting point for both works. The originally physical-technical representations have been stripped of their functional labels and reveal their aesthetic potential in a new context. Raimann’s concise concept is also reflected in the material design of the book, making it a special haptic experience.
Johannes Raimann (born 1992 in Vienna, lives and works in Düsseldorf) deals with the fundamentals and conditions of photography. In his works, he emphasizes “phôs” (light) in combination with “graphía” (sign/drawing). His interdisciplinary approach combines photography with other fields such as philosophy or physics in order to illuminate the multi-layered connections. For some years now, Raimann has increasingly been investigating specific materials and apparatus. He creates reflective surfaces that not only mirror the viewer, but also global production chains and the associated economic and social conditions.
Johan Nane Simonsen is a freelance art historian who lives and works in Vienna. In addition to independently realized projects, he studied art history at the University of Vienna and worked for various cultural and research institutions. He has been a member of the curatorial collective since 2017 and director of FOTOGALERIE WIEN since 2021.
